A boost for family already full of hope
Jewel Wilson took in her granddaughter Shantora as an infant when the girl's mother gave her up for adoption. But Wilson said it's Shantora who's been a blessing to her all these years. Shantora, now 16, has changed bandages on Wilson's sores, cleaned up around the house and cooked many dinners, including pork chops and corn bread. But the biggest blessing Shantora has given is her constant encouragement to Wilson, who has had poor health, including failing kidneys and a diabetes-related illness that led to the amputation of her right leg. "Sometimes I feel like throwing in the towel," said Wilson, 63. "When I start crying or get upset, she says 'Mama, don't fret. Pray.' " The grandmother and granddaughter this Christmas season will receive a food basket from the News Sentinel Empty Stocking Fund.
