Clinton Offers Economic Stimulus Plan
Clinton's plan comes as Democrats controlling Congress look at tax rebates, extended unemployment benefits and more food stamps to stimulate the sagging economy. The White House also is examining broad-based tax rebates comparable to the $300 to $600 checks sent to taxpayers in 2001, as well as bigger tax breaks for businesses that invest in new equipment. According to the campaign, the plan includes: -Establishing a $30 billion housing crisis fund to help states and localities deal with the fallout of foreclosures. -Setting a 90-day moratorium on subprime mortgages of at least five years, or until housing lenders have converted mortgages into loans families can afford. -Providing $25 billion in emergency energy assistance for families facing rising heating bills.
TheStar.com | GTA | Slain teen's mother weeps at murder trial
Hung was among the first officers on scene fighting to save the life of 4-year-old Scarlett Chen, who was found drowned in a bathtub in her family's northeast Toronto home on July 12, 2004. The autistic girl's mother, Xuan Peng, 35, is charged with second-degree murder. Last Sunday, Hung spoke at the funeral of her daughter, Stefanie, a spirited Grade 9 student found dying from multiple stab wounds in a snowbank near her home in the St. Clair Ave. E. and O'Connor Dr. area. A 15-year-old girl and 17-year-old boy, who has since turned 18, have been charged with first-degree murder in Stefanie's death. What triggered Hung's tears yesterday was a question from prosecutor Kim Motyl, who asked the police officer why it was some moments before she ordered Scarlett's father, David Chen, out of the bathroom where his daughter died.
Declan Walsh talks to Fatima Bhutto, Benazir's niece
For the first time in years the streets were plastered with Benazir posters, and yahooing men on motorcycles zipped through the traffic, honking their tinny horns. But the gate of 70 Clifton had a lone, defiant poster of Murtaza, who died in a hail of police gunfire in still disputed circumstances in 1996. Since then Fatima and Ghinwa have held Benazir "morally responsible" for his death. The bitterness was palpable and public. Over dinner, the pair were cheerless at the prospect of her aunt's imminent return. "If she didn't sign the death warrant, then who had the power to cover it up? She did," said Fatima indignantly. In support of her case she cited dead-end investigations, dodgy policemen and the mound of court papers and other testimony about her father's death that she had collected fastidiously in the office next door.
