| Semrau: Playing nice on the court, in the stands makes games more ...
Another winter youth basketball season tipped off last weekend as area boys and girls programs ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade levels took over every available gym space. As an area youth coach and program coordinator, I was again reminded that the kids are often fine. But it is the adults who have to be reminded to play nice. That is why many programs require parents to sign sportsmanship agreements. What have we come to you may ask? Last Saturday and Sunday served as a reminder of the good and bad side of youth sports, which certainly have changed a lot since I was first introduced to Dr. Naismith's invention. Hall of Fame coach John Boyle, a former coach at Madison East and Middleton, offered the best advice I have heard on making the experience a positive one for all.

Responding to the Jack Lynch Non-Story
Facts do not equal truth, and if you want to argue the position that they do, you will likely feel as if you won, but truth will have lost. It is a fact that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and we can make all sorts of observations about this and make claims such as "the sun rotates around the earth" or "we are the center of the universe." More exploration, however, tells us that not only does the earth actually rotate around the sun, but the illusion of the sun's rotation originates with our planet spinning on our own axis. In general, newspaper work doesn't require this much exploration or science, and I would hope the Spokesman-Review would care more about whether they can be as accurate as possible more than they do about whether they can claim dibs on being the first to report on a topic.
Authentic Louisiana cuisine in Columbus (10/3)
I like food. I like food a lot. As a matter of fact, I like food way too much and too often. I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world, some of the worst, and I know what's good ... at least to me. I prefer fine dining and casual over fast.Eventually the question surfaces: Does Columbus have fine dining? No, we do not have Commander's Palace, nor do we have a Tavern on the Green or Spago. But we do have a place that that is unpretentious, comfortably priced, and always satisfying. When people from out of town ask me if Columbus has fine dining, one of the places I point them to is J. Broussard's on Main Street, downtown in the old Elk's Lodge. It's hard to miss the plain black-and-white sign in the front of their establishment along with the angel.“What kind of food do they serve?" they ask.Simply put, “It offers food with French Creole overtones with a killer dessert menu," I explain.
