| Arts for the Schools salutes music, founder’s passion
More than 200 enthusiastic students gathered Wednesday in the gym of a Tahoe City grade school for the first assembly of the school year, but this would be no lecture. Instead, the Tahoe Lake students were greeted by a Grammy-award nominated singer, who entertained the young audience with a selection of songs. Perla Batalla, world music vocalist and composer, was performing the second of five concerts no admission charged for children at local schools before hitting the stage at Squaw Creek for a benefit concert Friday evening. Terry Yagura and the nonprofit Arts for the Schools she founded invited Batalla and her ensemble of professional musicians to perform for five different elementary school assembles this week. Fridays finale will include an evening of food, wine and prizes followed by a two-hour Batalla performance in the ballroom of the Resort at Squaw Creek.
How to lose weight in 2008
Finally, the new emphasis on healthy eating could mean a proliferation of so-called "functional foods": products containing vitamins or probiotic and prebiotic bacteria for gut health, or omega-3 for concentration. Science, then, is the new self-discipline. Fad diets RIP? JILLY COOPER Writer I loathe this time of year because I can't get anywhere near a typewriter for about 10 days and I become panicky. Therefore I misery-eat and put on about a stone, which is quite disgusting. When people hug me, I know I'm far too cuddly and that they can feel roll after roll of flesh. I've tried this year to steer clear of crystallised fruit and chocolates. I have a charismatic Polish carer to help me look after my husband, Leo [who has Parkinson's disease], and he does a lot of wonderful cooking, which keeps me out of the kitchen.
Internet Gambling Deserves a New Chance
Officers and board members of Internet gambling companies vetted and approved for trading on London markets—and underwritten by some of the globe's most respected financial institutions—have been taken into custody while on U.S. soil. And U.S. authorities have arrested online-payment company executives on specious charges of money laundering. It remains too early to tell how much this untenable war against Internet gaming will cost the U.S. in trade flows, innovation, and moral authority. But it is perfectly clear that it is time for America to stop pretending that the rule of law is a one-way street. .
Australia in the dock
An opinion poll in the Sydney Daily Telegraph showed 82% of Australians believed Ricky Ponting was not a great ambassador for the country, and 79% felt the national team did not play within the spirit of cricket. Abusive phone calls were made to Ponting’s parents. The country has its jingoists – three years ago, spectators at Perth, the venue for this week’s third Test, racially abused the South African team – but in the main it is a conservative nation embarrassed by the sharp practice of its representatives. Geoff Lawson, the Australian fast bowler turned Pakistan coach, accused Australia of arrogance and disrespecting the baggy green cap, while John Bertrand, the America’s Cup-winning yachtsman, called on Cricket Australia to tell its players to show the game more respect.
