| Authentic Louisiana cuisine in Columbus (10/3)
I like food. I like food a lot. As a matter of fact, I like food way too much and too often. I have eaten in some of the best restaurants in the world, some of the worst, and I know what's good ... at least to me. I prefer fine dining and casual over fast.Eventually the question surfaces: Does Columbus have fine dining? No, we do not have Commander's Palace, nor do we have a Tavern on the Green or Spago. But we do have a place that that is unpretentious, comfortably priced, and always satisfying. When people from out of town ask me if Columbus has fine dining, one of the places I point them to is J. Broussard's on Main Street, downtown in the old Elk's Lodge. It's hard to miss the plain black-and-white sign in the front of their establishment along with the angel.“What kind of food do they serve?" they ask.Simply put, “It offers food with French Creole overtones with a killer dessert menu," I explain.
Walid Waked of Track Six: Proving rock is not dead
But when office hours end, Yousry becomes the bass-guitar player with the local band Track Six, discarding his suit in favor of a Ramones t-shirt and jeans. This kind of dichotomy is everywhere nowadays. Struggling Egyptian artists take jobs in investment companies, advertising companies and other fields outside the music industry. If they were living elsewhere, they might have had the chance to pursue their dreams of becoming professional musicians, but here it's a part-time gig for most. .
Arts for the Schools salutes music, founder’s passion
More than 200 enthusiastic students gathered Wednesday in the gym of a Tahoe City grade school for the first assembly of the school year, but this would be no lecture. Instead, the Tahoe Lake students were greeted by a Grammy-award nominated singer, who entertained the young audience with a selection of songs. Perla Batalla, world music vocalist and composer, was performing the second of five concerts no admission charged for children at local schools before hitting the stage at Squaw Creek for a benefit concert Friday evening. Terry Yagura and the nonprofit Arts for the Schools she founded invited Batalla and her ensemble of professional musicians to perform for five different elementary school assembles this week. Fridays finale will include an evening of food, wine and prizes followed by a two-hour Batalla performance in the ballroom of the Resort at Squaw Creek.
