The progressive forces in Scottish politics must come together ...

The SNP won more seats than any other party and had a larger share of the vote. A cobbled together coalition of a wounded Labour party and a LibDem party clearly less popular than it was in 2003, would fly in the face of democracy and, more prosaically, risk a voter backlash at the next election. The pre-poll promise from the LibDems was that they would not risk a deal with a party that had not won the largest number of MSPs. Were they to simply ignore that, why would anyone trust what they said in the future?

The unanswered question is, therefore: can the SNP and the LibDems work together? There is general agreement between both parties on a number of issues, most notably the replacement of the council tax with a form of local income tax. An SNP-LibDem coalition would not have a majority at Holyrood, but with the support of the Greens, who are believed to be open to offers, the possibility of a functioning administration becomes more likely.

USC's McKnight, ASU's English have much to be thankful for

TEMPE, Ariz. - It's a familiar drill: friends and family sharing food and football.

Just another Thanksgiving Day for most.

Not for two families from New Orleans, Katrina survivors and longtime friends and neighbors who have been pushed apart and pulled together through football and the flood.

Not just another day -- or another game.

It's the college game the nation will be watching tonight, 11th-ranked USC at seventh-ranked Arizona State with the Pac-10 title and maybe a spot in the Rose Bowl on the line.

And on opposite sidelines will be USC freshman tailback Joe McKnight and the young man he's known since third grade, Sun Devils freshman defensive tackle Jonathan English, or "Tank" as most people call him.

Jack Brod, Early Tenant of Skyscraper, Dies at 98

The Empire State Building location and the Empire name proved useful in radio advertisements.

"I don't have to tell people where I am," Mr. Brod said in an interview with CNN in 1996.

He witnessed history, drama and comedy at his lofty address. He spoke of bizarre attempts to moor airships to the building's 1,250-foot mast, and of the day in 1945 when a B-25 bomber crashed into the 79th floor. He liked to say he was on King Kong's greeting committee, and each year he watched the 1933 movie at least twice.

He saw his rent increase 30-fold (after adjustment for greater space), the elevators become automated, and the replacement of all 6,379 windows. On at least one Valentine's Day, he gave wedding bands to couples married atop the building.

For years, Mr.
