Blais ends ‘culinary sabbatical’ — now what?

Molecular gastro guru Richard Blais is pretty tight-lipped about where he's been for the past five weeks; let's just say the chef isn't talking while the flavor lasts.

Meanwhile, Element, the Midtown restaurant where he was executive chef, closed Oct. 4. But as we all speculate as to his whereabouts ("Top Chef?" "Iron Chef?" The official term he's using for his absence is "culinary sabbatical") he's speculating as to where to get his next paycheck.

"I just got back into town late last week to find out that the restaurant had closed," the chef told us by phone. Blais and his bad-boy take on molecular gastronomy took over the failed restaurant's kitchen last spring, immediately developing a small but passionate group of followers.

Emmy for East Lake 'Miracle'?

East Lake's enviable transformation from a crack den shooting gallery to an expanding revitalized neighborhood that's become a national model for urban redevelopment now has another distinction — it's up for an Emmy.

Leslye Louis' Latkes Named Winner of White Castle Recipe Contest

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Nov. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Leslye Louis of New Melle, Missouri, was selected as the winner of the 16th annual White Castle recipe contest for her original creation, The Latkes You Crave.

A self-described "White Castle Purist", Leslye has been a fan of White Castles since she was a young girl. Through the years, White Castle has remained a big part of her life. She collects White Castle items; she's taken White Castles to her faculty meetings; enjoyed Valentine dinners at White Castle; and wherever she travels, Leslye always makes it a point to make White Castle her first stop.

"I'm really thrilled to have won the recipe contest," Leslye said. "My friends are calling me the 'Queen of the Castle.'"

The Latkes You Crave won out over nearly 300 tasty entries from throughout the country at this year's extremely edible event.

Rock lodgesters

Jones' company works with bands including Arms & Sleepers, Black Diamond Heavies, The Eames Era and Radio Moscow.

Jones said some of the Chicago hotels at which artists have stayed include the W Hotels, Hotel Sax (formerly the House of Blues Hotel) in River North and the Crowne Plaza Metro in the West Loop.

Though they are from the Chicago area, Fall Out Boy crashes at the Drake Hotel in the Gold Coast and the Hard Rock Hotel in the Loop when the band is in town, band frontman Pete Wentz told RedEye in a statement through his spokesman.

"The Hard Rock gives us whatever we ask for pretty much, but I have a feeling it has less to do with what band we're in and more with our penchant for demolition," Wentz said. "Besides, we always clam up and forget what to ask for and end up drinking tap water and eating the sponges in the bathroom."

Kanye West and Common are regular guests of the W Hotel on North Lake Shore Drive, said W Hotels spokeswoman Daphne Ortiz.
